Jefferson County Council candidates Jeff Roorda and Roger Hendrix visited the St. Louis Building and Construction Trades Council Sept. 7 to seek council members’ support and help in turning the County Council to a Democratic majority in the general election Nov. 8.

Roorda, business manager for the St. Louis Police Officers Association, is a former state legislator with a long history of supporting working families. He is running for the District 4 council seat.

Hendrix is business representative for Iron Workers Union Local 518 and was a longtime federal mediator. He is running for the District 2 council seat.

Both explained that the Republican dominated Jefferson County Council

has become dysfunctional with in-fighting among council members, leaving many voters frustrated.

“I’m knocking on doors and I’m getting great responses,” Hendrix said. “There’s still a lot of Democrats in Jefferson County and there are a lot of Republicans feeling disenfranchised. You won’t have a better friend of Labor if I get in there.”

Roorda said myth that Jefferson County, a longtime Democratic stronghold, has gone Republican has been overblown, but he said union voters need to turn out.

“In 2010 and 2014, members didn’t show up,” Roorda said. “In Presidential election years we’ve done well.”
