Port Council to honor memory of Dick Mantia at annual labor awards banquet

This year’s St. Louis Port Council awards dinner will be dedicated to the memory of the late Dick Mantia, former Port Council president and veteran executive secretary-treasurer of the St. Louis Building & Construction Trades Council,

Port Council President Jack Martorelli and Secretary-Treasurer Becky Sleeper announced the creation of the Dick Mantia Labor Man of the Year Award last week, as a means of permanently memorializing the service Brother Mantia provided to the Labor Movement over his 53-year career serving the members of Heat and Frost Insulators Local 1 as an executive board member, business representative, business manager and International Association representative and organizer, secretary-treasurer of the St. Louis Building & Construction Trades Council, president of the Port Council and Labor co-chairman of PRIDE, the labor-management cooperative.

“Dick was one of the great leaders of our labor movement and one of the strongest supporters of our Port Council,” Martorelli said. “His memory serves as a reminder to us all how one man can make a difference.”

• Dick Mantia Labor Man of the Year – This year’s labor honoree, the first to receive the Dick Mantia Labor Award, is David Cook, president, United Food & Commercial Workers Local 655.

• Able Helmsman Award – Steve Stenger, St. Louis Council executive.

Management Man of the Year – Todd Schnuck, chairman/CEO, Schnucks Markets.

“Schnucks is a special company,” Martorelli said. “The entire workforce, from janitors to meatcutters to clerks to department managers are union members, and it shows in the quality of their stores. This company deserves the recognition.”

The dinner will be held April 25 at The Cedars at St. Raymonds, 939 Lebanon Drive.

Cocktails will be served from 6-7 p.m., followed by dinner and the awards banquet.
