The St. Louis Building and Construction Trades Council will honor political and civil rights leaders at its annual Leadership Awards dinner Saturday, Aug. 26 at The Cedars at St. Raymond’s, 939 Lebanon Drive in St. Louis.
The evening will begin with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner and the awards ceremony at 7:30 p.m.
This year’s honorees include:
- St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson, a champion of working families who was sharply critical of the Missouri Legislature’s preemption legislation nullifying St. Louis’ higher minimum wage. Krewson is working with others to get the higher minimum wage on the ballot.
- NAACP-Missouri President Nimrod T. Chapel, Jr., who joined Missouri AFL-CIO President Mike Louis in filing a referral referendum petition to let voters decide the “right-to-work” issue and fought against a bigoted anti-worker bill passed this year by the Missouri House making it more difficult to prove workplace and housing discrimination.
- Missouri State Representative Bob Burns (D-Affton), a retired member of Teamsters Local 600 and tireless champion for workers’ rights, who fought valiantly to stop this year’s destructive “right-to-work” legislation from becoming law.
Tickets are $125 or $1,250 for a table of 10.
