St. Louis  Dennis Wallace, a Metro Transit bus driver, has died after contracting COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, according to announcements from Amalgamated Transit Union Local 788, which represents Metro employees, and Bi-State Development, which oversees the Metro Transit system.

“It is with sadness that we report our Union brother bus operator Dennis Wallace has fallen to COVID-19,” Local 788 announced on Twitter. “RIP to our Union brother,”

“We offer our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of our teammate, and remain committed to measures intended to keep our team members safer,” Bi-State said in a press release provided by Director of Communications Patti Beck.

She said Wallace had worked at Metro Transit for 9½ years.

To date, 15 Bi-State Development employees across six different locations have tested positive for COVID-19.

“The impacts of this horrible disease are devastating and today’s loss is a stark reminder of the serious threat COVID-19 poses to our families, friends, and communities,” the release stated.

“Anyone who had close contact with these team members was identified and reached out to directly. Those individuals were asked to self-quarantine for 14 days. In addition, the facilities and areas where potential exposure occurred have been sanitized and disinfected using CDC guidelines.”
