Raffles and silent auctions will proceed

The 4th Annual Clay Bird Shoot to benefit the Thomas Schmid Memorial Scholarship scheduled for Aug. 1 has been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Nick Ostmann, a member of Operating Engineers Local 513 helping to organize the event, said the group is continuing with raffle ticket sales. He said the silent auction will now be held online.

“It was a tough decision,” Ostmann said. “But with the number of coronavirus cases on the rise, we didn’t want to take the risk.”

Brother Schmid, a third-generation Sheet Metal Workers Local 36 member, died Sept. 27, 2016 in an ATV accident at age 26. He was also a volunteer fire fighter with Orchard Farm and Rivers Pointe fire districts.

Schmid graduated from Orchard Farm High School in 2009. The scholarship is open to seniors at Orchard Farm or Lewis and Clark Career Center who are pursuing an education in technical training or agriculture.

Anyone who has pre-registered for the event or has questions can contact Ostmann at 314-956-2333.
