THE STATE HOUSE INN in Springfield, Ill. has been removed from the Do Not Patronize list and is being recommended for union members doing business in the Capitol after the new owners signed a Project Labor Agreement with the Illinois AFL-CIO and the Central Illinois Building & Construction Trades Council.

Springfield, IL – The Illinois AFL-CIO and Central Illinois Building & Construction Trades Council are urging union members doing business here in the Illinois State Capitol to consider staying at the State House Inn, 101 East Adams. The new owners dumped non-union contractors and signed a Project Labor Agreement.

BOYCOTT WORKED
Illinois AFL-CIO President Tim Drea reports that in summer 2018, the hotel underwent a lengthy renovation using out-of-state, non-union contractors from Plano, Texas.

In the 20 months that followed, Labor groups canceled their reservations and called the hotel to protest the use of non-union contractors. Members of locals in the Central Illinois Building Trades Council protested in front of the hotel.

So it was little surprise to the Labor Movement when the State House Inn was placed into receivership last fall and sold to a hotel investor group. The new management, part of the Red Roof Inn group, met with the Trades Council and the Illinois AFL-CIO and agreed to a memorandum of understanding and to a Project Labor Agreement to use Springfield-area union workers for future renovation and maintenance projects, Drea reports.

GET A ROOM
“We are pleased that the new management will employ local trades people and contractors,” Drea said. “When planning meetings or staying overnight, whether on business or for pleasure, the Illinois AFL-CIO and the Central Illinois Building and Trades Council highly recommend the State House Inn.

“On behalf of working families in the Springfield area, thank you for your strong support. You made the difference.”

State House Inn is designated as a historic landmark within walking distance of the state capitol, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, the Old State Capitol and other important and popular sites in the city. Guests can eat on-site at the Top Hat Lounge. Meeting rooms and the Abraham Lincoln Suite are available.
