After being diagnosed with breast cancer, U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill says she’s ready to “fight like a girl.”

McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat and longtime friend of Labor, shared her diagnosis with constituents on social media in late February. She said it was detected through a regular mammogram and would be undergoing three weeks of treatment in St. Louis.

“It’s a little scary, but my prognosis is good and I expect a full recovery,” she wrote in her Feb. 22 post on tumblr.

Since her announcement, colleagues from across the political spectrum and the public have flooded social media channels with well wishes and support.

“In the middle of all this crazy, I’ve been blown away by kindness,” McCaskill wrote March 3 on her Facebook page. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the warm wishes and outpouring of support. I’m ready to ‪#‎fightlikeagirl‬.”

McCaskill is encouraging women to get their annual mammograms and to remind their sisters, moms and friends to do the same.
