Some 700 pharmacy technicians represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 655 will be affected by today’s announced sale of Schnucks pharmacies to CVS.

CVS said it would post all pharmacist and pharmacy technician positions and interview all Schnucks employees who apply.

Local 655 President David Cook issued the following statement: “My number one priority is to protect these high-quality union jobs that provide good wages and great benefits. I am urging all our partners to reapply with CVS when their stores are converted. I have reached out to representatives of CVS to request a meeting to discuss their purchase and discuss the transition. My desire is that CVS will offer my highly-trained partners jobs and that CVS — a health care company — will want to keep the high-quality health insurance my partners currently have.”

CVS is the country’s largest pharmacy chain, and will acquire and operate 99 of the Schnucks’ 110 pharmacies and brand them as CVS Pharmacy, according to a Tuesday news release. The other 11 are slated to close.

In the St. Louis area, slated closures include the in-store pharmacy in the Schuncks at 10233 Manchester Road, and three specialty pharmacies located at 11550 Page Service Drive in Maryland Heights; 3915 Watson Road in the Lindenwood Park neighborhood of St. Louis; and 1520 Brentwood Boulevard in Brentwood.

CVS already has more than 30 pharmacies in the St. Louis area on the Missouri side and roughly a dozen in the Metro East.
