Texas AFL-CIO has established fund for relief efforts

The Texas AFL-CIO has established a Texas Workers’ Relief Fund to provide direct help to union families in need following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.

John Patrick, president of the Texas AFL-CIO, said: “We know from experience that union members also are extraordinarily generous in tough times. This is the toughest of times.”

At least 38 people were killed, many were injured, and thousands were forced from their homes last week as parts of the Houston area were inundated with some 50 inches of rain following the initial hurricane.

“We have never seen a Texas tragedy on this scale,” Patrick said in an email to central labor councils across America seeking assistance. “We cannot make anyone whole, but our movement can send a message of solidarity, a message that we are with working people badly harmed by Hurricane Harvey in heart, in soul and in spirit.”

Donations to the Texas Workers’ Relief Fund are tax deductible and can be made online at texasaflcio.org/donate.

Financial donations can also be made to the Red Cross at redcross.org/hp/harvey1.
