Arnold, MO – IBEW Local 1 is asking the public to think twice before eating at the new A&W Restaurant being built at 3996 Jeffco Blvd. here because it is using a non-AFL-CIO affiliated company that pays below area standard wages and benefits negotiated by Local 1 for electrical work.
The new restaurant, located at the corner of Jeffco Boulevard and Telegraph Road, was a former McDonald’s and BP Gas Station. It is owned by Jim Sill and Jim Sprick, who operate several A&W and Long John Silver restaurant franchises in the metro-St. Louis area.
The duo is using Reinhold Electric, which employs members from Local 57, a non-AFL-CIO affiliated electrical workers “union” that has grown notorious for undercutting union labor and contractors. IBEW Local 1 began bannering and hand billing the new A&W on April 25.
“We are area residents and have continually sought to improve and maintain wages and benefits for our families,” said Local 1 Business Representative Chuck DeMoulin. “We do not want others undermining the wages and benefits that we have worked so diligently to achieve, which in turn supports our community.”
Local 1 believes that employers who cut wages and benefits reduce the earning power of all working people and contribute to a situation that ultimately hurts all workers. Because of that belief, Local 1 is asking the public not to patronize the new A&W restaurant.
