Ronald R. “Papa Shoes” Altschuh, of Waterloo, Ill., passed away May 6, 2021, at age 84.
Brother Altschuh worked 43 years as a glazier with Glaziers Local 513 and was previously a deputy marshal with Cahokia Police Department. He was well known as the man who could fix, build and design almost anything. He will be missed by all who knew him and loved him.
To Local 513 retiree Brian Stiens, Altschuh was a mentor. Stiens shared his indebtedness to him on the union’s Facebook page. He said that Altschuh and other 513 members gave him the confidence to participate within the Local and dutifully serve for 25 years as the financial secretary.
“I spent a lot of time with Ron and picked up on his professionalism, demeanor and attention to detail,” Stiens wrote. “I can only hope that I was that ‘guy’ as I instructed my apprentices. There is truly a hole in my heart for a man that shaped my life.”
Altschuh is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marcy Altschuh; his children Debbie (Mike) Anderson, Danny Altschuh, Kenny (Linda) Altschuh, Conni (Karn) Mether, and Patti (Tony Pitts) Freeland; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; and many other special friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents Richard and Louise (nee Temme) Altschuh from St. Louis.
