In Memoriam: IBEW Local 309’s John Burk

John Lavern Burk, 91, a more than 50-year member of IBEW Local 309, died Saturday, Feb. 23 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL.

Brother Burk was born in Brighton, IL, the son of John R. and Lillie Burk. In addition to working as a union electrician, he had worked as an electrical inspector for the City of Edwardsville.

Brother Burk married Carole Davis in 1949. She preceded him in death in 2000. He is survived by a son, John R. Burk of Edwardsville; three daughters, Linda Castens of Maryville, Judy (John) Poeling of Edwardsville, and Terrie (Mark) Stunkel of Edwardsville; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Geraldine Workman-Huff of Bethalto.

Brother Burk was a past board member and head usher at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Edwardsville, a past board member for Main Street Community Center in Edwardsville, delivered for Meals on Wheels, and in 1996, earned a certificate for excellence from the Edwardsville Parks Department. He was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Brother Burk was honored by Local 309 with a 50-year pin in 2014.

A funeral was held at St. John’s church on Feb. 27 with burial at Valley View Cemetery. The family requested memorials to the St. John’s Church Building Fund, Vitas Hospice or Hospice of the Valley Gardiner Home in Phoenix, AR.
