IN MEMORIAM: Iron Workers Local 392’s Charlie Smith

Iron Workers Local 392’s Charles E. “Charlie” Smith, Jr., 82, died June 20, 2019, at his home in Glen Carbon, Ill.

Brother Smith retired from Local 392 in 1998 after 43 years of service as an iron worker, continuing the 150 years of his family’s generations working with Local 392 in East St. Louis.

Brother Smith was known for his beautiful yard and thoroughly enjoyed cutting his grass. He enjoyed his days of squirrel hunting and making magnets from comic strips and cartoons. He was a true American patriot who was proud to fly the American flag and was a fan of John Deere. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.

Brother Smith is survived by three sons Dave (Tammy) Smith, of Glen Carbon; Randy Smith, of Glen Carbon; and Charles “Chuck” (Mary Ann) Smith, of Glen Carbon; five grandchildren Kelly Smith, Dana and Kyle Sardigal, Danielle and Joe Heffernan, Miranda and George Beckett and Rachel and Kevin Willingham; a great granddaughter, Payton Plummer; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Susan Smith, of Cleveland, Tenn.; a sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Jerry Solis, of Beckemeyer, Ill.; a brother-in-law, Bill Leslie, of Beckemeyer, Ill.; special nephew Ben Smith, of Cleveland, Tenn.; and other extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Leona A. (Houba) Smith; his parents Charles E. Smith, Sr. and Evalee (Pyles) Smith; a sister, Joann Leslie; a brother, Jerry Smith, and two brothers-in-law, Chuck and Frank Houba.

A funeral service was held June 23, 2019 at Irwin Chapel in Glen Carbon with interment at Buck Road Cemetery in Maryville, Ill. A celebration of life ceremony was held afterward at the American Legion Post 435 in Glen Carbon.
