Timothy Michael Funk, a 23-year member of Iron Workers Local 392, passed away May 28, 2021 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Ill. He was 41.
Iron Workers Local 392 Business Manager John Schmitt said that Funk was sent home from his job as an iron worker at United Rebar, Inc. on May 28 because it was rained out.
Later that day, Funk agreed to help a friend from the Jenkins Display Company, of Vandalia, Ill., with a sign. The company is not connected in any way to Local 392.
Funk was working on the Motel 6 sign at 1240 E. Chain of Rocks Road in Pontoon Beach, Ill., when he fell 60 feet from a bucket lift that had broken from its support arm. Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn said authorities are investigating what happened to the bucket lift and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified.
“It’s been a rough couple of months for the Funk family, and they have our sincere condolences,” Schmitt said. “Tim’s dad Mike Funk, a retired Iron Workers Local 392 member, just passed away in April.”
A funeral service was held June 5 at Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia followed by interment at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia.
Brother Funk, of Vandalia, was born on June 30, 1979 in St. Louis, Mo. In addition to his iron working career, he had a passion for drumming and was one of the best in the area having played for various bands throughout the years.
