Michael T. “Mick” Chumley, retired member and assistant to the business manager of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 562, passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2014. He was 70 years old.

Brother Chumley grew up in the St. Louis area and attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic Grade School and Bishop DuBourg High School. He was initiated into Plumbers’ Local 35 in August of 1968 and served as an apprentice, journeyman, foreman and officer.

During his years with Local 35, Brother Chumley was elected business agent, executive board member, U/A convention delegate and business manager/ secretary-treasurer.

With the merging of Plumbers 35 and Pipefitters Local 562 in 1999, Brother Chumley continued his responsibilities as assistant to the business manager and was elected president of MINK Pipe Trades, a position he held until his retirement in 2008.

Brother Chumley is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Ann, four sons, Michael, Brian (Sheryl), Daniel (Tammy), Joshua (Whitney) – all members of Local 562 – and one daughter, Jennifer Hansen (Robert) – a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 343 – and nine grandchildren, Amanda, Daniel, Kelsea, Jacob, Samantha, Megan, Michael, Elizabeth and Liam.

A funeral mass was held Monday, Aug. 18, at New Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia, IL, followed by internment at Resurrection Cemetery.

The family has requested contributions in Brother Chumley’s memory to Washington University School of Medicine.
