The owners of Kenrick's Meat and Catering in Affton say they are proud to be a family-owned, union employer.

Kenricks began as a small butcher shop in 1945. Thirty years later, Joe Wienmann purchased the business.

Today, Wienmann – affectionately known by his customers as "Joe the Butcher" – and his son Tim own the market, which is represented by Meat Cutters Local 88.

“We've been a member of the union since we have owned the shop," Tim Weinmann said. "We're a family-owned business with a strong core team of employees.”

Kenrick's Shop Steward Mike Byassee said Kenrick's is unique because one-store union shops are uncommon in the industry.

“We treat our employees like family, and we want them to be happy,” he said. “We've never had any issues between the company and its union employees.”

FULL SERVICE

Kenrick's is a full-service, specialty meat and seafood market and deli, Tim Weinmann said. The shop offers more than 80 varieties of seafood and 60 varieties of sausage.

“We're always trying different variations of sausages based on what's popular and in demand, and we'll try anything once,” Weinmann said. “We even made gummy bear sausages at one point, but those didn't go over well as you can imagine.”

The company is also a wholesale supplier, providing meats to more than 96 restaurants in the St. Louis area.

Additionally, the shop has USDA status, which means that there's a government inspector on site every day ensuring the finest, freshest cuts of meat available.

CATERING

Kenrick's provides catering services and has a cafe, which sells gourmet sandwiches, hamburgers and other homemade dishes. The market has a wide variety of prepared-on-site frozen meals for people on the go and seniors and hand-made pizzas.

“We also carry local products in our store such as Ted Drew's and Schlafly," Wienmannn said. "We buy local and sell local to keep the business all in our yard.”
