Fairview Heights, IL – Everybody wants to help with the election, but sometimes it’s hard to find a good way to do it.

Well, here’s one. The Illinois AFL-CIO will be operating a phone bank in Fairview Heights from now until the Nov. 8 general election, and volunteers are needed to make calls.

The phone bank is at the Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) Legislative Office, 4 Executive Drive, Fairview Heights. It operates from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The teachers will be there on Thursday nights but more help is needed to provide 10 volunteers a shift on the other nights. A script will be provided. The calls will be on behalf of Labor-backed candidates in key races.

Locals or individuals 18 or older may volunteer. Call (618) 521-2326 or send an email to Just showing up may not help, because if volunteers don’t call ahead of time, an evening’s calls may be canceled.

“We really need to get people there to work those phones,” IFT Secretary-Treasurer Marcia Campbell told the Southwestern Illinois Central Labor Council at its meeting Aug. 16. “We’re just trying to get people to volunteer. We’ve got a lot of important races we need to be calling on.

“If we could get different groups to take a day, that would help,” she said. “Then no single group will have to cover days and days of it.”
