Sheri Gassaway, editor for the Labor Tribune’s Women of Labor section, will serve as master of ceremonies at the Missouri Women in Trades (MoWIT) Blue Collar/Black Tie Tradeswomen Awards Gala on Sept. 20.

Gassaway is an award-winning Labor journalist with more than 30 years of multimedia and public relations experience. She launched the Labor Tribune’s Women of Labor section to showcase the important work female union members are contributing to the Labor community and to highlight the increasing number of women finding success in nontraditional union careers.

“I’m honored to emcee this inaugural event to recognize the area’s outstanding tradeswomen and the unions and contractors who’ve gone the extra mile to support them,” said Gassaway, who also serves on the MoWIT Executive Board. “Through my reporting for the Labor Tribune, I can tell you firsthand that St. Louis is a shining example of the great work being done to recruit, retain and mentor women in the building trades.”

ABOUT THE GALA
The event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at Sheet Metal Workers’ Local 36 Grand Hall, 2319 Chouteau Ave. in St. Louis. It will include dinner, an award ceremony and a dance party. The gala is black-tie optional and will include a cash bar.

Awards that will be presented at the gala include Tradeswoman of the Year, Union of the Year and Contractor of the Year. Additionally, MoWIT will be calling up two groups for recognition: tradeswomen who have entered into an apprenticeship in the last year and tradeswomen who have journeyed out in the last year.

Mo. Senator Gina Walsh (D-Bellefontaine Neighbors), a champion for women in the building trades and working-class people, will be the guest speaker at the event. Walsh, who serves as the first female president of the Missouri State Building and Construction Trades Council, is also the first woman to go through Heat & Frost Insulators Local 1 apprenticeship program.
