Laborers Local 42 awards $7,500 in scholarships to members’ children

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS: Laborers Local 42 recently awarded five scholarships to members’ children to help them pursue their studies. Laborers Local 42 recently awarded four members’ children with $1,500 scholarships through the union’s annual Larry Flinn Memorial Scholarship program. The daughter of another Local 42 member won an Eastern Missouri Laborers’ District Council Opportunity Scholarship, which was also for $1,500.

Winners of Local 42 Larry Flinn Memorial Scholarships are:

• Matilda Biegener, the daughter of Local 42 member Robert Biegener.

• Abby Tampow, the daughter of Local 42 member Brian Tampow.

• Nina O’Connell, the daughter of Local 42 member Jeffrey O’Connell.

• Ethan Escobar, the son of Local 42 member and LiUNA Midwest Region Organizer Carlos Escobar.

The winner of the Eastern Missouri Laborers’ District Council (EMLDC) Opportunity Scholarship is Kadiah Baalman, the daughter of Local 42 member Tony Baalman. The Opportunity Scholarship is awarded annual to one member’s child in each of the district’s 10 locals.

Local 42 has awarded $112,400 in Larry Flinn Memorial Scholarships to 96 members’ children since starting the scholarship program in 1987 in memory of the local’s late business manager Larry Flinn.

Local 42 Business Manager/Secretary-Treasurer Brandon Flinn, and Local 42 President Richard McLaughlin presented the awards in a ceremony at the Local 42 Union Hall.
