Laborers Local 42 recently honored four members’ children with $1,500 scholarships as the 2016 winners of the union’s annual Larry Flinn Memorial Scholarship program. An additional Local 42 dependent won an Eastern Missouri Laborers’ District Council Scholarship, also for $1,500.

Winners of Local 42 Larry Flinn Memorial Scholarships are:

  • Cassidy Dietz, 18, daughter of 21-year member Rich Dietz, who is studying neuroscience at the University of Kentucky.
  • Courtney Bell, 21, daughter of 15-year member Carl Bell, who is studying nursing at Concordia University of Wisconsin.
  • Sarah Beck, 20, daughter of 29-year member Tom Beck, who is studying nursing at the University Missouri St. Louis.
  • Amanda Oggesen, 18, daughter of 31-year member Pete Oggesen, who is studying criminal justice at the University of Central Missouri.

The winner of the Eastern Missouri Laborers’ District Council Opportunity Scholarship is Chloe Escobar, 20, daughter of 15-year member Carlos Escobar, who is studying nursing at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Local 42 has awarded $100,400 in scholarships to 89 children of members since starting the scholarship program in memory of the local’s late business manager Larry Flinn in 1987.

“My uncle never went to college, but he appreciated the importance of a good education,” Local 42 Business Manager/Secretary-Treasurer Brandon Flinn told this year’s winners. “Just remember that it was your parents’ union and their struggles for better wages and working conditions that made this possible.”

The scholarships were awarded Aug. 6 at Local 42’s Union Hall.

Winners are judged on grades, three letters of recommendation and an essay on a topic selected by the union. A special scholarship committee reviews all entries and makes the selections.
