The Labor & Employment Relations Association (LERA) Gateway Chapter is hosting a networking reception for professionals and a program on opioids in the workplace on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

The event will be held at Bartolino’s Osteria at 2103 Sulphur Ave. in St. Louis. The networking session, which includes drinks and appetizers, begins at 4 p.m., and the program runs from 5:15 to 6 p.m.

John Gaal, the St. Louis-Kansas City Carpenters Regional Council’s director of training and workforce development, will be the program’s guest speaker. Gaal will share ways that health care providers, employers and unions may address the opioid problem.

Strategies include new approaches to pain management, analyzing claims data to detect potential drug problems, limiting pain medication and an eight-hour certification course called Mental Health First Aid that can help supervisors and peers identify employees who may require counseling.
