James L. “Jim” Flanagan, a former IBEW Local 1439 shop steward, passed away Feb. 5, 2021 at age 85. He worked at Ameren UE (Union Electric) for 43 years.
Brother Flanagan started at Union Electric in 1958 in the storeroom before becoming a meter reader. He became an apprentice in 1962 and made journeyman in 1964. He spent his journeyman time in St. Charles moving into a supervisor role and eventually a superintendent in Wentzville until his retirement in 2001.
He followed the path of his grandfather who was a lineman for the City of St. Louis connecting fire boxes on the city streets. His father James spent his career in the power plants and as president of Operating Engineers Local 148.
He leaves behind two sons in the trade as well. Mike Flanagan is a Local 1439 first line supervisor in Troy. Tim Flanagan is a shop steward and overhead repairman in St. Charles and has served as a Local 1439 vice-president and executive board member.
Brother Flanagan is the beloved husband of the late Mary Jane Flanagan (nee Clancy); dearest father of Karen and (Jim) Butz, Mary Lou (Gary) Howard, James (Kelly) Flanagan, Tim (Kim) Flanagan, Michael (Sarah) Flanagan and the late Kathleen Howard; dear grandfather of Sean, Matt, Amanda, Kaitlin, Tim, Jimmy, Mackenzie, Reilly, Colleen, Jack, Katie, Delainey, Jacob, Nora, Samantha and the late Patrick; great-grandfather of Graham and Sutton; dear brother of Thomas (Sue) Flanagan; and dear brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, cousin and friend to many.
