Granite City – Holiday helping is gearing up in Madison County, where hundreds of steel workers remain laid off and benefits are long exhausted.

One event to plan on will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16 at the Labor Temple, 2014 State St. in Granite City, when Santa will bring gifts and good cheer for the children of steelworkers.

Treat bags, cookies and hot chocolate are on the menu. Children of members of United Steel Workers Locals 1899, 50 and 68 are invited, and parents may bring their cameras.

DROP-OFF SITE

In addition, collections are being made for homeless shelters and food banks, and winter clothing is also being collected.

State Representative Katie Stuart’s office at 2105 Vandalia St. in Collinsville will be a drop-off site for winter clothing from now until Dec. 19. Food and clothing can also be taken from noon to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 20 to Granite City Township Hall, 2060 Delmar.

“During this holiday season, we need to remember those who have fallen on hard times, as many of the families of laid-off steelworkers have, and try to bring a little joy to their lives,” Stuart said.

“I hate the thought of a child missing an opportunity to enjoy a day of playing outside in the snow, or a parent missing the opportunity to see their child grow and play, because they could not afford the appropriate cold weather gear.”
