What started as a one-man shop in 1987 has since turned into one of the area’s premier heating and cooling companies its customers have come to rely upon for quality service for years.
Zipf-Air, a SMART St. Louis contractor, is a full service, residential heating and air conditioning company that sells, installs and services air conditioning systems and high efficiency furnaces.
SMART St. Louis is a partnership between Sheet Metal Workers Local 36 and 15 of its St. Louis-area residential HVAC contractors – including Zipf-Air – who use only highly trained, non-commissioned, union technicians and installers.

“A lot of our customers have been with us since we first opened, and many don’t realize we’re a union shop,” said John Zipf, owner of Zipf-Air. “We get a lot of repeat business and referrals.”
With the use of union craftsmen, the SMART St. Louis initiative sets the bar for residential HVAC work in the St. Louis area, ensuring projects will be done right the first time, on time and on budget.
“I’ve always believed in using highly trained craftsmen,” Zipf said. “They have higher standards.”
Zipf-Air also specializes in the installation and maintenance of boilers, indoor air quality control systems, humidifiers, smart thermostats, ductless air conditioning systems and heat pumps. It offers free estimates, preventative maintenance agreements, rebates and specials and provides commercial services and products.
