St. Louis Emerging Labor Leaders’ (ST-ELL) second annual “Kick Start to School” Kickball Tournament to benefit St. Louis Crisis Nursery will be held Sunday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Willmore Park near Hampton and Gravois avenues.
Proceeds will be used to purchase school supplies for children served by the Nursery, which works to prevent child abuse and neglect and provides emergency intervention, respite care and support to families in crisis.
ST-ELL President Gordon Smith, a member of CWA Local 6300, said last year’s tournament drew seven teams and raised $1,112 for the Nursery.
“It would be amazing if we could double what we raised last year,” Smith said.
Smith visited the Crisis Nursery recently and urged fellow union members to volunteer in the Nursery’s efforts and to donate clothing for the infants to 12 years olds the Nursery assists.
YOU CAN HELP
In addition to the tournament, Smith said organizers are also seeking monetary contributions, as well as donations of school supplies and non-perishable snacks for children through age 12.
Food and soft drinks will be provided. Alcohol is permitted, however, no glass bottles.
KICKING IT UP
The year’s event is sponsored by the Missouri AFL-CIO, the Greater St. Louis Labor Council, CWA Local 6300 and Sheet Metal Workers Local 36.
ST-ELL is a group of young and newer union members working together to educate, empower and mobilize the next generation of labor leaders.
