Laborers’ Local 110 is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a hit-and-run driver who critically injured one of its own May 18 in Affton.

Doug Hindle, a 24-year member of the union set to retire June 1, was working on a paving project near Heege Road and New Hampshire Avenue when he was struck and run over by a pick-up truck that fled the scene around 12:45 a.m.

“This person doesn’t have the character to do what’s right so we’re hoping somebody who knows what happened – a friend or relative of the person – will come forward,” said Don Willey, Local 110 business manager. “Doug is our brother, and we are happy to help any way we can.”

Doug’s wife Kathy Hindle told the Labor Tribune on Thursday her husband has had four surgeries in the last week. She said Doug had a ruptured aorta, fractures in his arms, legs and hands and third-degree asphalt burns on much of his body. He is scheduled for another surgery on Friday to debride the skin on his arms and face.

“He is on a ventilator and hasn’t been awake yet,” Kathy said. “God bless the Laborers’ union for offering the reward money. It means everything to me. My husband is fighting for his life, and I want the person who did this to pay. I don’t want this happening to anyone else.”

A You Caring account has been set up to help Hindle’s family with expenses. Visit the account here to make a contribution. Hindle’s employer, Krupp Construction, has donated $1,000.

The vehicle involved in the incident is described as a Chevy or GMC white extended cab pick-up truck. It has front end damage and may be missing a driver’s side headlight. Police do not have a description of the driver.

Anyone with information is urged to call the St. Louis County Police Department at 636-529-8210 or CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-8477.
