Caseyville, IL – Steamfitters Local 439 Business Manager Totsie Bailey and Gori-Julian & Associates Law Firm, Edwardsville hosted a fundraiser for the Siteman Cancer Center April 20 at the Local 439 hall.

With many union leaders and Democratic Party officeholders in attendance, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin noted that the Trump Administration’s budget is cuts $7 billion from the National Institutes for Health, money that is needed for important medical research.

“The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the most important medical research agency in the world,” Durbin said. “They do more medical research than any other agency of any other government in the world.

“That is the Trump budget, and I’m not making that up. So you want to know where the battle is? It’s not just the individual patients fighting this battle, it’s a battle for all of us in politics. When it gets down to medical research, party labels go out the window. People start standing up and working together.”

Durbin is working with Missouri Republican Senator Roy Blount, who chairs the Health and Human Services subcommittee to increase funding to the NIH.

“He added $2 billion to the NIH last year, and he wants to do it again this year,” Durbin said. “And I’ve been cheering him on every step of the way.

“If you put the money into the research, and the research into the patients, you’ll get the results that give people hope.”

Durbin thanked the attendees for their contributions to Siteman Cancer Center.

He added, “Thank goodness we live in an age where we have the Siteman Center, and what they have been able to do – provide the very best cancer care in the entire Midwest, if not the nation, right here in our backyard.”
