Steelworkers Organization for Active Retirees (SOAR) Chapter 7-34-2 held its usual enormous holiday party on Monday, Dec. 12 at the Neighborhood Social Club in Pontoon Beach, IL.

The packed room was introduced to Madison County Associate Judge Sarah D. Smith, who is a lifelong resident of Edwardsville married to a U.S. Army officer and the daughter of a longtime member of IBEW Local 309. She is now the 3rd Judicial Circuit Family Division Judge, presiding over child support and domestic violence issues.

After being introduced by attorney Greg Becker, Smith thanked the retirees for their generosity in helping families in need. “I see a lot of guys coming in who are laid off,” she said. “Just seeing some of the things your group does is so heart-warming and touching. It is making a great difference.”

Smith is the mother of three small boys and worked for five years as an assistant state’s attorney. She is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Illinois Army National Guard who was mobilized for six weeks in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina and later served in Kosovo and Afghanistan, being awarded the Bronze Star. She has spoken at the United Nations and to foreign ministers of defense.
