Collinsville, IL. – Laid-off steelworkers and their families received food, clothing and other items Dec. 20 at a Granite City Holiday Food Basket Giveaway supported by State Rep. Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville), the United Way, Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR) and other community groups.

“I’m appreciative of the willingness and generosity from so many in our community who decided to give back this holiday season,” Stuart said. “As winter approaches, it’s important that we offer assistance to those who could use some help to make sure their families are warm and well fed. Thank you to everyone who donated their clothes, food or time this year to help make the holidays better for our neighbors.”

Over the past month, Stuart’s office has been collecting winter clothing items in conjunction with community groups that have collected food and clothing. Last week’s event, which took place at the Granite City Township Hall, distributed collected items to the hundreds of steelworkers and their families who were impacted by layoffs in recent years at U.S. Steel’s Granite City Works.
