The Illinois AFL-CIO Executive Board swore in two new members during a virtual meeting April 14.
- Steve Powell will represent the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 881 on the board.
Powell – son of long-time Vice President Ron Powell – is the president of Local 881 and has been with the local since 1985. He began as a business agent in central Illinois before becoming legislative and political representative for the local.
Powell served in the political department at the UFCW international union from 1990-95 and was elected secretary-treasurer of Local 881 – a position he held until 2018, when he took over as president.
During his time as secretary treasurer, Powell also served as the political director for the UFCW international.
- Bill Mangin, business manager for Heat and Frost Insulators Local 17, also was sworn in to the board. Mangin started his career with Local 17 in 1987, becoming business manager in 2017. Prior to becoming the business manager, Mangin administered three Local 17 benefit funds and was the local’s first organizer.
Mangin has been instrumental in Labor’s efforts to pass the Illinois Hazardous Materials Workforce Training Act (SB1407) in the Illinois General Assembly.
