Kick up your heels and join your fellow union members on Sept. 19 in this year’s Metro St. Louis YWCA’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event to take a stand against sexual violence.

Registration for the walk, which will be held at the Missouri Athletic Club, 405 Washington Ave., in St. Louis, begins at 5:30 p.m. and the walk kicks off at 7 p.m. The event is part of an international men’s march to speak out against rape, sexual assault and gender violence. However, women are encouraged to attend the event as well.

Money raised from the event helps fund YWCA services, including the Women’s Resource Center and YWCA’s Woman’s Place, both of which provide crisis intervention, counseling and other support to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Kevin FitzGerald, a Heat & Frost Insulators Local 1 retiree and an active workers’ advocate, is once again organizing a team called “Union One” representing Organized Labor.

“It’s my attempt to demonstrate Organized Labor’s support in the effort to help to victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence,” said FitzGerald, who is also a member of Missouri Jobs with Justice. “It’s a fun evening for a very serious cause.”

To register for the “Union One’ team, visit ywcastl.ywca.org/goto/union1. Enter “solidarity” as the password, then select individual registration for $25 and then fill out the required fields.

FitzGerald said that during the registration process, you will be asked if you want to buy shoes for $45. He said there is no need to buy the shoes as they are loaned out with the registration fee. However, he noted that sometimes they run out.

If you are unable to attend the event but would like to make a donation to the cause on behalf of team Union One, make checks payable to YWCA St. Louis and write “Team Union One” on the memo line and mail to 3820 West Pine Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108.

YWCA is the oldest and largest multicultural women’s organization in the world with more than 25 million members in 106 countries, including 2.6 million members and participants in some 250 local associations in the United States.

YWCA Metro St. Louis has served St. Louis women and their families for more than 110 years. Its mission is to eliminate racism and empower women by providing safe places for women and girls, building strong women leaders and advocating for women’s rights and civil rights in Congress.
