Bricklayers Local 1 members score top awards at Bricklayers 500 Regional Contest

Several Bricklayers Local 1 journeymen and apprentices who took part in the 2023 Spec Mix Bricklayer 500 Regional Contest will advance to the National Championships in Las Vegas in January 2024.

“We are proud to have you all representing our Administrative District Council and showing the world who has #TheBestHandsInTheBusiness!” the union shared on Facebook after the award winners were announced.

Local 1 journeyman Rudy Menke and his mason tender Steve Braswell, employed by Local 1 signatory contractor John Smith Masonry, were the first-place team winners in the skills contest, and they won the Top Craftsman Award.

Chris Cain and his mason tender Eric Heberle, also employed by John Smith Masonry, will be joining them in Las Vegas as they were the winners of the “Fastest Trowel on the Block” contest.

Additionally, the winners of the SkillsUSA Apprentice Contests who will be advancing to the Las Vegas championships from our area will be:
Carter Firebaugh, first place for first year, Swanson Masonry.
Chad Mask, second place for first year, Lampkin Masonry.
Matthew Lampkin first place for second year, Lampkin Masonry.
Toni Lewis, second place for second year, John Smith Masonry.
Reigning champion Ryan Newton, first place for third year, Lampkin Masonry.
Ben Reimer, of Heitkamp Masonry, and Grant Cole, of John Smith Masonry, who tied for second place for third-year contest.
