Credits success to union building trades partners

Since laying its foundation in St. Louis more than a century ago, McCarthy Building Companies has shaped many of the region’s most significant buildings, infrastructure projects and communities. The company credits its success to its longstanding partnership with the area’s union building trades.

“Our 100-year history in St. Louis wouldn’t have been possible without our union trade partners,” said Ryan Freeman, McCarthy vice president of operations. “McCarthy works with every one of the building and industrial construction trades in some capacity. We rely on St. Louis’ strong workforce to deliver consistent project results for our owners.”

The company’s expertise is clearly visible throughout the area – from iconic structures that define the city skyline, such as the Metropolitan Square building, to cherished community assets, McCarthy has built a thriving national practice that ranks among the largest and most diversified commercial construction companies in America with specialized expertise in complex projects from state-of-the-art hospital expansions, to advanced research facilities, sophisticated academic campuses and world-class hospitality spaces.

“We’re a local builder with national resources and expertise, so we can bring unique value to every project,” said John Buescher, president of McCarthy’s Central Region.

OWNED BY ITS EMPLOYEES

As the region’s largest builder and one of St. Louis’ largest private companies, McCarthy is a significant contributor to the region’s economic vitality. And since 2002, the company has been 100 percent owned by its employees.

“Because our employees are also the owners of the company, each of us has a special responsibility to each other to innovate and deliver maximum value to our clients as we build our future together,” Buescher said.

Some of McCarthy’s current local projects include the renovation and expansion of the Gateway Arch Museum, which opens this summer, and the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station, expected to be completed in 2019. The company also has an impressive roster of long-term clients, including Mercy health system, Edward Jones and Washington University in St. Louis.

GIVING BACK

McCarthy is also committed to giving back to its communities. Through the McCarthy Heart Hats® program, the firm’s 500-plus local employees are involved in a range of community outreach activities, serving organizations and causes that are most meaningful to them – whether it’s The Women’s Safe House, Wyman Center outreach for disadvantaged youth or FamilyForward children’s home, which provides trauma-focused counseling to build safer, healthier relationships for children and families.

For more than a decade, McCarthy employees and their families have volunteered their time and expertise to build the start and finish-line areas for the annual GO! St. Louis Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend.
