Workers in St. Louis County can expect to have 12 weeks of paid parental leave, up from the previous two weeks.

The action by the St. Louis County Council, on a 5-2 vote, means that full-time workers who become new parents will have the time to deal with their family issues. It includes time not only for birth or adoption but for medical appointments.

In 2019, County Executive Sam Page instituted two weeks of paid leave by executive order, realizing workers needed this critical time.

The county follows St. Louis, which implemented a paid leave policy in early July.

Voting against this important family need were Republicans Ernie Traskas (6th District) and Mark Harder (7th District). Republican Tim Fitch (3rd District) supported the measure along with all four Democrats.

At press time, Page had not yet signed the bill, expressing some concerns.
