Lily Seago, a second-year Iron Workers Local 396 apprentice, has been honored with a North American Building Trades Union (NABTU) Tradeswoman Hero award.

The program, which debuted in 2020, recognizes four tradeswomen each month that lead by example and perform their duties at an outstanding level. She is one of several local tradeswomen who have received the national award.

‘PLEASANT SURPRISE’
“I am honored to receive the award,” Seago told the Labor Tribune. “I didn’t even know I had been nominated, so it was quite a pleasant surprise.”

Local 396 Business Manager Mike Heibeck, who nominated Seago, said she joined the union on May 1, 2021 and has been an outstanding member and a great representative of Local 396 ever since.

‘EXCELLED QUICKLY’
“She has excelled quickly through the apprenticeship program completing OSHA 10, OSHA Subpart R IWSPR, Crane Signaling Hand and Voice IWCRANS and Scaffold Erector/Dismantler IWSED,” Heibeck said. “She has also excelled quickly in our welding program and has already received welding certifications SMAW 3G, 4G 1” weld test.”

Heibeck said Seago is well respected on the jobsite and attends union meetings and the local’s functions on a regular basis. He added that Seago is a very likeable and humble person.

“She has worked almost her whole apprenticeship with Alberici and has excelled as one of their top welders even as apprentice,” he said. “You do not normally see that with an apprentice at this early stage of their career.”
