Laborers Local 110 father receives honorary membership card for son killed in tragic accident who was planning to join union

Richard Boyd, Sr., a proud Laborers Local 110 member for two decades, has received an honorary membership card for his son Richard Boyd, Jr., who was planning to join the union, but was killed in a tragic accident Feb 26.

Boyd, Jr., who was planning to follow in his father’s footsteps and scheduled to enroll in Local 110 on Feb. 27, was hired by his father’s company Concrete Strategies and worked for the company for about three weeks. The two last worked together Feb. 25.

Hours later, Boyd, Jr., 19, was killed in a hit-and-run crash in St. Louis along with three others. Police say he was riding in an SUV shortly after 1:30 a.m. Feb. 26 with seven other people when another driver ran a red light, smashed into the SUV and sent it flying over an overpass in the city’s Midtown neighborhood.

“He was set to join Local 110 as an apprentice the Monday following his accident,” said Local 110 Business Manager Ronny Griffin. “The request for the card was made and LiUNA responded very quickly, providing a beautifully etched gold card and certificate of honorary membership.”
