Altamont, IL – Painters and Allied Trades District Council 58 East recently recognize members who completed safety training programs with STAR (Safety Training Awards Recognition) Awards and a barbecue at Schmidt Park.

Members who had completed training were entered in a four-tiered raffle for different prizes. The members with the most safety training were eligible for the biggest prizes.

BIG WINNER: Ray Green (at right), also of Local 471, won a $20,000 cash prize.

Ray Green, of Local 471, won $20,000.

Richard Branham, also of Local 471, won and Xpress john boat from Cope Marine in O’Fallon, IL.

Art Hurlburt, director of training for District Council 58, said members have to complete 40 hours of safety training and have at least 500 safe work hours a year to be eligible for prizes. Members contribute a nickel an hour from their paychecks to fund the incentive program.

“Everybody who works puts in a nickel an hour,” Hurlburt said. “It goes into a fund, and at the end of the year the committee decides what kind of prizes they’re going to give away.”

This is the first year District Council 58 has given away a boat or cash. In previous years, prizes have included ATVs and a truck.
