Area Labor councils have a full slate of parades and festivities planned around Labor Day this year, including the St. Louis Labor Council’s first ever Labor Festival on Sunday, Aug. 27 in Florissant, Mo.
The event is being held in lieu of the regular Labor Day parade held in downtown St. Louis.
“We’re doing something different this year, and it’s shaping up to be a great event,” St. Louis Labor Council President Pat White said. “We’re going to have a men’s and women’s tug-o-war, live music, fun for the kids and other adult activities, along with food and beverages. It’s going to be a great event for the whole family.”
The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m.at the Knights of Columbus at 50 St. Francois St., Florissant, Mo. 63031.
The Labor Council is asking locals with more than a thousand members to donate $500, and locals with less than a thousand to donate $250.
TUG-O-WAR RULES
The tug-o-war rules for men’s and women’s teams are as follows.
For men’s teams:
• Participants must be part of the organization sponsoring the team.
• No more than six participants.
• Total weight of the team cannot exceed 1,500 pounds.
• Entry fee is $150.
For women’s teams:
• Participants can come from any Labor organization
• No more than six participants.
• Entry fee is $150.

ILLINOIS PRE-LABOR DAY FESTIVITIES
• Aug. 23 & 26 – Madison County Federation of Labor will kick-off the pre-Labor Day festivities on Wednesday, Aug. 23, with the beginning games of the James Stanley Memorial Charity Softball Tournament at Gordon F. Moore Community Park in Alton, Ill. The tournament will conclude on Saturday, Aug. 26, with the winning team selecting the recipient of the prize money and receiving the “traveling trophy” for display in their union hall.
This year’s fee of $300 per team was due before the captain’s meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 16, at the Machinists Center 161 N. Shamrock St., East Alton, Ill. 62024. All participating groups are asked to have someone at this meeting for tournament rules and selection of brackets.

• Aug. 26 – Wood River/East Alton Parade and Picnic will step off at 10 a.m. at the Wood River Round House parking lot and continue north on Wood River Ave. to the Wilshire Village parking lot for a picnic at Gordon Moore Park with food, refreshments.
Madison County Transit will provide free shuttle service starting at 8 a.m. at Wilshire Village and running every 15 minutes to the start of the parade. After the parade, shuttle service will be provided back to the Round House.

LABOR DAY PARADES AND PICNICS
Parades and picnics taking place on Labor Day, Sept. 4 are as follows:
• Wood River/East Alton Union Family Parade will step off at 10 a.m., followed by the Union Family and Friends Picnic in Gordon Moore Community Park. The picnic will include live music, speeches, children’s games, and free food and drinks.
Parade assembly will begin at 8 a.m. at the Wood River Round House parking lot. Madison County Transit will provide FREE shuttle service from the parking lot to the start of the parade and bring participants back as needed.
• The Southwestern Illinois Central Labor Council parade in downtown Belleville, will step off at 10 a.m. in the fourth block of South 1st St., and end at Hough Park with the annual Picnic. The parade and picnic are open to union members and their families. Food, beverages, rides and games for kids are available. The picnic open to union members and their families ONLY and food, beverages, rides and games for kids are planned. No pets of any kind are allowed at the parade or picnic.

• The 43rd Annual Tri-City Labor Day Parade and Picnic will step off at 10 a.m. Parade assembly will begin at 8 a.m. in downtown Granite City on State Street between Niedringhaus and 18th Street. The parade will end Wilson Park with a Union Family and Friends Picnic including live music, speeches, children’s games, food and refreshments.
