Janitors working in downtown St. Louis in current contract negotiations, in addition to seeking wage and benefit improvements, are asking three major cleaning contractors to include June 19 – the new Juneteenth national holiday, as an official paid holiday in their contacts.

The St. Louis janitorial contract with Service Employees Local 1, which covers nearly 1,600 janitors throughout the city, expires October 31, 2022

“Local 1 essential janitors – many Black and Brown – have risked their health and safety during the global pandemic to protect Missourian families and communities. Now, it is time for these essential janitors to get the respect, protection and pay that they deserve,” said a news release from  Local 1.

The companies being asked to include the new holiday are Clean-Tech, 4M and ABM.
