
Jefferson City – GRO – Grass Roots Organizing – recently honored Service Employees International Union Local 1 Vice President Nancy Cross with the 2012 Jack Lillard Public Service Award at their 12th Anniversary Celebration.
GRO is a community organizing non-profit based in Mexico, MO.
SEIU Local 1 represents 6,000 workers in the region, and has been instrumental in many legislative and ballot initiative fights that benefit low-wage workers. These include improving access to public transit, raising the minimum wage and attempting to cap payday lending interest rates.
As a labor leader, Cross has been key to building labor community alliances.
Past recipients of the Jack Lillard Award include Former Missouri Governor Bob Holden, Representative Mary Still, Former Missouri State Representative Judy Baker and Missouri Jobs with Justice Organizer Aaron Burnett.

Jack Lillard was a Grass Roots Organizing (GRO) board member and community leader who worked on many peoples’ rights campaigns including rights for mobile home park owners and welfare reform policies that protected the rights of workers.
