Richard Boyd, Sr. a proud Laborers Local 110 member for two decades, was elated to learn that his son Richard Boyd, Jr. would be working with him on the same construction jobsite.
Boyd, Jr., who was planning to follow in his father’s footsteps and scheduled to enroll in Local 110 on Feb. 28, was hired by his father’s company Concrete Strategies about three weeks ago. The two last worked together Feb. 25.
Hours later, Boyd, Jr., 19, was killed in a hit-and-run crash in St. Louis along with three others. Police say he was riding in an SUV shortly after 1:30 a.m. Feb. 26 with seven other people when another driver ran a red light, smashed into the SUV and sent it flying over an overpass in the city’s Midtown neighborhood. Cedric Eugene Dixon, 34, later turned himself him to police and is facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter among other charges.
HONOR TO WORK SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH HIM
“It was an honor to not only be there for my son and help him get a good job, but to work side-by-side with him,” Boyd, Sr. told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It’s not going to be the same without my boy. It just hurts right now. I have to just keep him in my heart.”
Jimmy Kisner, a co-worker of Boyd’s, has started a Go Fund Me page to help pay for funeral expenses. He said Boyd, Jr. was a hard-working young man, and that Boyd, Sr. was proud to have his son working alongside of him.
“You could see it (the pride) in his smile every day since Richie, Jr. was hired,” Kisner wrote on the Go Fund Me page. “He was eager to learn from his father along with the rest of our crew who enjoyed helping him learn the trade.”
SLPS GRADUATE
Boyd, Jr. and several other passengers in the SUV were recent graduates of St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS). He attended Carnahan High School. After graduating, he worked the past two years with progressive advocacy group Action St. Louis helping to register people to vote.
“Our hearts go out to the families involved, and to the students and staff who are closest to these young people,” SLPS said in a statement. “Our district trauma team has been engaged, and counselors have been on hand to speak with staff and students who have been touched by this tragedy.”
