The St. Louis Comptroller’s Office has launched an investigation after the police union’s business manager announced in a public hearing that the city has failed to withhold more than $100,000 in dues for its police union.

Joe Steiger, business manager for the St. Louis Police Officers Association, made the revelation during a Missouri Senate Transportation, Infrastructure and Public Safety Committee meeting on Jan. 17, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He was testifying in favor of Senate Bill 808 that could allow for the return of city police to state control.

“At this time, it’s really over $100,000 that they have not collected for our organization,” he said during the hearing, adding that he was told the issue was due to a new payroll system.

After the hearing, Steiger told the newspaper that the $100,000-plus shortfall is due to more than 40 union members not having dues deducted, and a dues increase that union members approved in June that hasn’t been implemented.

“As of the last pay period, it’s still the same amount that it’s been for forever,” Steiger said.

A spokeswoman for St. Louis Comptroller Darlene Green said in statement “Our office has begun an immediate investigation into the issue and will respond with all relevant information as made available.”
