Springfield, IL – The state of Illinois has settled with a contractor over more than $76,000 in unlawfully deducted wages.

In 2021, Castle Concrete Construction began making unauthorized deductions from workers’ paychecks, and also failed to pay one of its employees for the time he spent driving the company truck to and from job sites and working in Castle’s facility.

Upon investigation by the Illinois Attorney General’s Workplace Rights Bureau, Castle signed an assurance of voluntary compliance that will ensure workers receive all the money illegally deducted from their wages with additional damages, and the company driver will be paid for his uncompensated time.

“Any company doing business in our state must follow the laws that require workers to be compensated for the hours they work without unauthorized pay deductions,” said Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul. “I am committed to enforcing laws that protect Illinois workers and support law-abiding businesses.”

Castle Concrete is based in Pana, Ill., southeast of Springfield. Assistant Attorney General Jack Cramer and Bureau Chief Alvar Ayala handled the case for Raoul’s office.

Any worker who believes their employer is violating the law is encouraged to call the Workplace Rights Hotline at 844-740-5076 or visit the Workplace Rights Bureau website at illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/Rights-of-the-People/workplace-rights.
