The Tri-County Labor Club is hosting its annual holiday party Dec. 7 and asking for canned food donations or grocery gift cards to help local students.

The party will be held at the club at 10 Droste Square in St. Charles from noon to 8 p.m. to allow people to arrive at different times in an effort to mitigate large crowds because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Food and drinks will be provided.

The canned food and gift cards will be presented to Dardenne Elementary School, where more than half of the students qualify for the free or reduced breakfast and lunch program. This is the sixth year the club has hosted the food drive for the school.

Last year’s party was cancelled due to the pandemic, but the club still held the food drive, asking members to donate grocery gift cards instead of canned goods for the students.

“The principal at Dardenne told me that last year’s gift cards were really appreciated,” said Joe Mueller, club president. “They were able to not only purchase food for folks in need, but coats, shoes, gloves or even a hot meal on Christmas Eve.”

The club, which represents union members in St. Charles, Warren and Lincoln counties, is recommending that anyone attending the party take the necessary precautions for themselves and others and refrain from attending if they are sick. Masks will be available for those who request them.
