Belleville, IL – Bill Thurston, president of the Southwestern Illinois Central Labor Council, has lined up one of the Midwest’s top union leaders to speak at the Council’s Sept. 1 awards dinner.
The main speaker will be Ed Smith, president and CEO of ULLICO (Union Labor and Life Insurance Co.), the labor-owned insurance and investment company.
Originally from Marion, IL, Smith had a long career with the Laborers’ International Union, serving as Midwest regional manager from 1994 to 2008, as an international vice president, on the General Executive Board and as assistant to the general president.
Earlier, he was president and business manager of the Southern Illinois Laborers District Council.
Also speaking will be a representative of the Illinois AFL-CIO.
The dinner will be held, as per the usual, at Panorama Banquet Center in Bel Air Bowl, 200 South Belt West, Belleville, at 7 p.m. on that Thursday. Adding to the luster is that the Council will be celebrating its 50th anniversary dinner.
