Frankie D’s Boxing Club is hosting an amateur boxing night to benefit Darrin Weiss, an Iron Workers Local 396 retiree fighting cancer, on Saturday, Jan. 15.

The event, which will feature basket raffles, a 50/50 raffle, food, beer and soda, will be held at the Florissant Civic Center at 1 James J. Eagan Drive in Florissant. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the first bout begins at 7 p.m.

Kirk Douglas, Jr., a 27-year member of Iron Workers Local 396, owns the non-profit boxing club, which is located in Moscow Mills. It offers its gym free for boxers age 8 to 40-plus to train.

“Darrin was one of the first guys I met when I joined Iron Workers Local 396,” Douglas said. “He was always willing to lend a helping hand, and everyone who knows him loves him.”

Douglas said the event will feature St. Louis-area boxers competing with boxers from around the United States. Two of the bouts will include Local 396’s Corey Hendricks, a 20-plus-year member, and Koben Callaway, a first-year apprentice.

“We’re trying to get all the locals involved in the event,” Douglas said. “I did a union night boxing fundraiser for another Local 396 member about four years ago, and it went pretty well.”

Ringside tickets for the event are sold out, but general admission tickets are still available for $25 a person and $250 a table. Call 636-887-5319 for tickets. Credit cards or cash are accepted.
