YOUR LETTERS: Don’t let Missouri politicians take away citizen initiative rights

Missouri legislators returned to Jefferson City last month and filed more than two dozen bills to gut Missouri’s long-standing citizen initiative process, thwart direct democracy and end majority rule. We cannot stand idly by.

The bills filed in Missouri this year and over the past six years are part of a national movement in conservative states to restrict the power of direct democracy. Here in Missouri, the citizen initiative process has been a key tool in proactive wins on increasing the minimum wage, expanding Medicaid and protecting
Labor rights in Missouri. The initiative petition process has bettered the lives of hundreds of thousands of Missourians.
