More than a dozen vehicles in IBEW Local 1’s parking lot were burglarized on Oct. 19 in what’s becoming an all too common issue in St. Louis: the smash-and-grab trend where thieves break into cars or property to steal items.

This incident happened at the union’s hall at 5850 Elizabeth Ave. near Hampton in the afternoon, security footage shows. Two men wearing dark clothing hopped out of a white Kia without license plates and hit 13 cars in about 20 minutes.

“One of the last cars hit had an alarm, and by the time someone came out of the building, the thieves were gone,” said Local 1 Business Manager Frank Jacobs. “We’re going to help our members with the deductibles.”

Jacobs said police arrested one of the men in a stolen car the night of Oct. 20.

The union is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the second suspect. Anyone with information can call Crimestoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
