Laborers Local 42 recently awarded three members’ children with $1,500 scholarships through the union’s annual Larry Flinn Memorial Scholarship program. The son of another Local 42 member won an Eastern Missouri Laborers’ District Council Scholarship, which was also for $1,500.

Winners of Local 42 Larry Flinn Memorial Scholarships are:

• Courtney Bell, 22, daughter of 16-year member Carl Bell, who is studying nursing at Concordia University in Wisconsin;

• Ja’Marion Johnson, 18, son of 18-year member Raphael Johnson, who is studying business law at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley.

• Jordan Schroeder, 18, daughter of 20-year member Ron Schroeder, who is studying nursing at St. Louis Community College at Meramec.

The winner of the Eastern Missouri Laborers’ District Council Opportunity Scholarship is Mason Brooks, 21, son of 28-year member Mike Brooks, who is studying exercise science at Lindenwood University.

Local 42 has awarded $106,400 in scholarships to 92 children of members since starting the scholarship program in 1987 in memory of the local’s late business manager Larry Flinn.

His nephew, Local 42 business Manager/Secretary-Treasurer Brandon Flinn, and other union officers presented the awards in a ceremony at the Local 42 Union Hall.

Winners were judged on grades, three letters of recommendation and an essay on a topic selected by the union. A special scholarship committee reviewed all entries and made the selections.
