Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 562 recently delivered a total of 255 backpacks to be used by students at two schools in Ferguson.

When kids returned to school this year, they were given the backpacks brimming with notebooks, pencils, pens, rulers, highlighters, binders and folders.

“We’re all part of the community,” said Local 562 Business Manager John O’Mara, “and we just want to make sure everyone gets a good education with the materials they need.”

“This is just fantastic,” said Tresha Watson, counselor at Ferguson Middle School, who coordinated the collection of the items donated by Local 562, the Mechanical Contractors Association and the Plumbing Industry Council.

“The students will really be able to use these items,” Watson said.

Backpacks also were delivered to nearby Berkeley Intermediate School.

Helping deliver the backpacks were a dozen members of Local 562’s “Champions” program.

The program recruits minority students throughout the region and trains them for six weeks before they become pre-apprentices in Local 562.

Champions is an acronym for Creating Hometown Advantages for Minority Participation in Our Neighborhoods.
